Bill Jay (British, 1940-2009) Weegee the Famous, 1968 Gelatin silver print on Agfa paper 11 x 7-1/2 inches (27.9 x 19.1 cm) (image) 14 x 11 inches (sheet) Titled, dated, and inscribed in pencil, margin recto. Signed in pencil, verso. Full inscription reads: Weegee the Famous (Arthur Fellig) was a loud-mouthed, cigar-chomping New York bum- and he photographed like it, with a raw honesty and power that has never been matched. I photographed in him in his one room apartment, littered with piles of prints and photographic paraphernalia, a few months before he died, in 1968. He was alone, sad and often incoherent, but his pictures speak on, with Weegee's own true and honest voice.
