Jo Davidson (1883–1952) was an American sculptor specializing in highly realistic portrait busts, Davidson did not require his subjects to formally pose for him; rather, he observed and spoke with them in order to capture their essential selves. Modelling primarily with clay, the final products were typically cast in terra-cotta, bronze, or carved from marble. Desert Victory, pictured here, was created by the artist after seeing a film in 1944 about the British Eighth Army's North African campaign.
