The Spanish painter, graphic artist and sculptor Pablo Picasso is regarded as one of the defining artistic figures of the modern era. As a co-founder of Cubism, he revolutionised the conception of form and space and developed an extraordinary stylistic diversity throughout his career. Alongside painting, graphic art and sculpture, ceramics also occupy an important place in his oeuvre. From 1946 onwards, Picasso worked in Vallauris in the south of France, using the medium of ceramics as a testing ground for his artistic ideas. In collaboration with the owners of the Madoura studio, Suzanne and Georges Ramié, he created numerous vessels and sculptures in which he combined traditional forms with his unmistakable visual language.

The vase on offer, dating from 1953, belongs to this productive phase. The white earthenware vessel has a slender, amphora-like shape and two tall, curved handles, which lend it an elegant silhouette. The surface features a high-contrast design of black and white glaze and is textured by incised lines. The decoration forms a stylised female figure: the neck becomes the head with simplified facial features, whilst on the body, ornamentally abstracted forms come together to form a cohesive whole. Linear patterns, rosettes and curved elements give rhythm to the surface and blend with the sculptural form. In this way, Picasso transforms the traditional vase form into a figurative representation. The work exemplifies Picasso’s ability to transform ceramics into an object that is both sculptural and narrative. The combination of vessel form and figure results in a work that lies somewhere between a functional object and a sculpture, impressively demonstrating the innovative power of his ceramic work.
