SCHEUREN, CASPAR JOHANN NEPOMUK1810 Aachen - 1887 Düsseldorf

Title: "Geusenfahrt am Morgen".
Soldiers of the 17th Century Crossing in a Punt.
Technique: Oil on wood.
Measurement: 45 x 64cm.
Notation: Signed lower left (presumably by an unknown hand): "C. Scheuren".
Frame: Framed.
Provenance:
Private ownership, Germany.

We are grateful to thank Irene Haberland, Bonn, for her help cataloguing the present painting using a high-resolution digital photograph.

A watercolour painting by Scheuren dated 1850 with the motif of the Geusenfahrt was part of the King Ludwig Album (sheet 211, today Staatliche Graphische Sammlung München). Boetticher lists a painting of the same title without a date with the addition: 'Für den Prinzen Waldemar v. Preussen. Dr Lucanus owned a painting in Halberstadt.' (Friedrich v. Boetticher, Malerwerke d. 19. Jahrhunderts II.2, p. 546, no. 40). The motif was reproduced as a print around 1850. There are several known watercolours from the 1870s by Caspar Scheuren in which he revisited this popular motif.
