Heinrich Kley (German, 1863-1945) Das Bluemboot Ink on paper 7-1/2 x 5 inches (19.1 x 12.7 cm) (sheet) Not signed Henrich Kley created this unique ink drawing of a knight slaying a dragon as a bookplate for his wife Fanny Kley who was a book collector. The work was created on the title page of the book Das Blumenboot by Hermann Sudermann (J. G. Cotta'sche Buchhandlung Nachfolger, 1905). A bookplate, or ex libris, is used in collecting to identify the owner of the book and has been common practice since about the 14th century. Rather than common practice, Kley would add a small drawings on the title pages of Fanny's books and then lovingly add her name to the inside.
