本幅寫於二十世紀之初，屬其晚歲之作。畫面祗見巨柏正中挺立，如拔地昂起，呈插天之勢。上伸枝丫狀若龍蛇盤旋，下繞粗幹，如翻雲捲浪，環環緊扣，造型極盡詭異，堪與「清奇古怪」的四漢柏媲美！上下均以胡椒密點帶出濃蔭舖天蓋地的半封閉佈局，樹側有紅衣僧人盤膝坐於蒲團上，狀若面壁，默對如此奇詭之境潛心修行，以求悟道。全畫色調沉厚，惟老僧紅衣頓生點晴之效，而用筆老辣，運轉頓折間，如虎虎生風，呈拙中見巧之功。縱觀吳穀祥筆下作品，怪奇大胆若本幅者，莫之有也！
