Lot Details
Pencil and Oil on paper. Monogrammed and dated in the lower right. With the inscription "DRZ 34" on the reverse. On two sheets of paper jointed with tape on the reverse. 29.7 x 42 cm. , the full sheet. [CH].
- Around the turn of the millennium, his work underwent a radical transformation in which Richter moved away from abstract, gestural images to complex figurative representations imbued with a narrative tone. - His bold, sophisticated compositions merge with a plethora of grotesque formal elements and art-historical references, resulting in an inimitable and highly recognisable style. - In this work, Richter presents a contemporary interpretation of the art-historically traditional subject of ‘Susanna in the Bath’. - In the year of its creation, the work was part of his highly acclaimed solo exhibition ‘Hirn’ (Brain), which was dedicated to his works on paper. - Most recently, the Kunsthalle Tübingen, among others, showed a comprehensive retrospective exhibition dedicated to the so-called ‘Punk of Painting’ (FAZ). - Since 2006, the artist has held a professorship at the Institute for Fine Arts at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna.
Daniel Richter, Hirn, Neuer Berliner Kunstverein, Berlin, May 9 - June 22, 2003 (illustrated on p. 58)
