Lynn Chadwick (1914-2003) Sitting Couple in Robes, 1980 Bronze with black patina 9 x 15 x 16-1/2 inches (22.9 x 38.1 x 41.9 cm) Ed. 2/9 Incised on reverse: CHADWICK / 1980 / 791 / 2/9 PROVENANCE: Lillian Heidenberg Fine Art, Brooklyn, New York; Private collection, Quebec, Canada, acquired from above. LITERATURE: D. Farr and E. Chadwick, Lynn Chadwick Sculptor, Oxford, 1990, no. 791, p. 304, another cast illustrated. We are grateful to Sarah Chadwick for her assistance in cataloguing this lot. In Sitting Couple in Robes (1980), Lynn Chadwick returns to one of his enduring subjects: the paired human figure. Triangular and rectangular heads distinguish the female and male, while broad robes spread around them in angular folds. The lighter faces stand out against the dark, textured bronze, drawing attention to their upright bearing. Seated close together with their legs extended, the figures have a relaxed familiarity tempered by the formality of their cloaks. The sculpture achieves a commanding presence through the breadth of its silhouette and the assured balance of the two forms.
