Lynn Chadwick (1914-2003) Maquette VII Sitting Elektra, 1969 Bronze with black patina polished elements 13 x 15 x 16-1/2 inches (33.0 x 38.1 x 41.9 cm) Ed. 1/6 Incised on leg: Chadwick / 69 / 584 PROVENANCE: Lillian Heidenberg Fine Art, Brooklyn, New York; Private collection, Quebec, Canada, acquired from above. LITERATURE: D. Farr and E. Chadwick, Lynn Chadwick Sculptor, Oxford, 1990, no. 584, p. 236, another cast illustrated. We are grateful to Sarah Chadwick for her assistance in cataloguing this lot. The polished face and chest of Lynn Chadwick's Maquette VII Sitting Elektra stand out against its dark bronze surface. A diamond-shaped head rises above narrow shoulders, while the rounded torso softens the figure's angular construction. Chadwick compared the bright chest panels of his Elektra figures to breastplates, a description that suits the armored appearance of this seated woman. Her extended legs give the pose a casual ease, while her head remains upright. Cast in an edition of six, the sculpture is one of several variations on the Elektra subject that Chadwick developed in 1969.
