Nobuo Sekine (b. 1942) Phase Conception G150-20, 1989 Gold leaf and mixed media on canvas 64 x 89-3/4 inches (162.6 x 228.0 cm) Signed, titled, and dated sticker on reverse: Nobuo Sekine/ Phase Conception G150-20/ '89 PROVENANCE: Private collection, Santa Monica, California; By descent to the present owner, Tomball, Texas. Nobuo Sekine, a pivotal figure in the Mono-ha (School of Things) movement, created the 1980s Phase Conception series, which explores themes of materiality and spatial perception through manipulating materials and transforming them to reveal their intrinsic properties. Sekine's focus was not just on the objects themselves, but on the relational space they inhabit and the viewer's perception of that space. This approach reflected his philosophy that materials should speak for themselves, revealing their inherent qualities through minimal intervention, which invites contemplation of nature, form, and void.
