Lot Details
Acrylic on panel. Signed and dated in upper left. Signed and dated on the reverse. 128 x 87.5 cm. , incl. artist frame. [JS].
- A powerful composition that gains particular intensity from the radiance of the color and the contrast between surface and structure. - Förg's combines seemingly opposites: the geometric rigor of the composition with the gestural spontaneity of the vibrant application of paint. - A fine example of Förg's masterful play with the adaptation of art-historical traditions: In addition to Blinky Palermo, Förg refers to the American post-war art of Barnett Newman or Brice Marden. - In 2014, the Museum Brandhorst, Munich, presented a first posthumous retrospective of the artist's work, followed by a show at the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, and the Dallas Museum of Art in 2018, as well as a major retrospective at the Long Museum, Shanghai, in 2023.
The work is registered in the archive of the Estate Günther Förg under the number WVF 89.B.0879. We are grateful to Mr Michael Neff, Estate Günther Förg, for his kind support in cataloging this lot.
Galerie Bärbel Grässlin, Frankfurt a. M.. Private collection Bavaria (acquired from the above in 2020) Private collection Berlin
In very good condition. Slightly dusty underneath the glass in places of the edges. In the llower left of the yellow with a small superficial paint or dirt adhesion, presumably from the making. In the original artist's frame, with isolated small traces of scratching and rubbing. Not unframed for cataloging. The condition report was compiled in daylight to the best of knowledge and belief.
