Lot Details
OVERBECK, FRITZ1869 Bremen - 1909 Bröcken

Title: Red House with Birches.
Date: Apparently around 1896.
Technique: Oil on card.
Mounting: Laid down on card.
Measurement: 45 x 59cm.
Notation: Date without year lower right: "10/8 (= 10th of August)".
Frame: Framed.
Certificate:
Photo expertise by Ms Gertrud Overbeck, friends of the Fritz and Hermine Overbeck Foundation, Bremen-Vegesack, dated 11th May 1994: 'Listed in the (internal) cat.rais. of the Overbeck family under no. W 209' (updated 'W 86').

Provenance:
Private ownership, Germany,
acquired in 1994 from Galerie Cohrs-Zirus, Worpswede.

We want to thank Dr Katja Pourshirazi, Bremen, for her help cataloguing the present painting.

Fritz Overbeck liked to label studies on cardboard with the date but without the year, as is also the case here. Dr Katja Pourshirazi from the Overbeck Museum, Bremen, considers a date around 1896 to be possible for stylistic reasons. There is no executed canvas version of the motif. However, paintings from around 1897/98 take up the red house behind birch trunks in a varied form.
