Claude Venard (1913-1999) La chaise espagnole Oil on canvas 39-3/8 x 31-3/4 inches (100.0 x 80.6 cm) Signed lower right: C. Venard PROVENANCE: Galerie Romanet Rive-Gauche, Paris; Private collection, San Diego, California. NOTE: This lot is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Alain Vercel. La chaise espagnole is a particularly strong example of Claude Venard's highly individual style. Although associated with the postwar French avant-garde, Venard developed a visual language entirely his own, combining recognizable objects with bold, almost abstract forms, heavy outlines, and remarkably thick, tactile layers of paint. Rather than simply depicting a chair, he builds it through color and texture, giving the painting an almost sculptural presence. It is this balance between figuration and abstraction—and his unmistakable handling of the painted surface—that gives Venard's work such a distinctive place in postwar French painting.
