In 20th Century Fox, After Ed Ruscha (2008), Vik Muniz revisits Ruscha's Large Trademark with Eight Spotlights of 1962. Ruscha transformed the familiar film studio logo into a monumental painting whose broad proportions recall a cinema screen. Its dramatic perspective and sweeping spotlights capture the spectacle of Hollywood through the language of commercial advertising. For his Pictures of Cars series, Muniz reconstructed Ruscha's imagery using steel and rusted automobile metal before photographing the arrangement. From a distance the image is immediately recognizable. Closer inspection reveals the textures of the metal beneath the illusion. The choice of material carries a particular relevance to Ruscha's subjects, connecting Hollywood with the cars and roads that shape the experience of Los Angeles. The work invites the viewer to move between recognizing the borrowed image and discovering how it was made. A film logo becomes a painting, then a construction in metal, then a photograph. Through these successive transformations, Muniz gives a familiar subject a new physical character while retaining the visual force of Ruscha's original HID12401132022 © 2026 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved www.HA.com/TexasAuctioneerLicenseNotice
