NOTE: This work is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from the Cruz-Diez Foundation signed by Gabriel Cruz. Carlos Cruz-Diez was one of the great innovators of Latin American abstraction and a central figure in the development of Kinetic and Optical Art. Throughout his career, however, his real subject was color—not simply as something applied to a surface, but as an experience that could change continually through light, movement, and perception. Physichromie 1065 of 1976 belongs to the artist's most important and enduring series, begun in 1959. Here, screenprinted aluminum and precisely positioned stainless-steel elements interact with ambient light to produce colors that appear to shift as the viewer moves in front of the work. What we see is therefore never completely fixed: the artwork changes according to where we stand, how we move, and even the light surrounding it. By the 1970s, Cruz-Diez had brought these ideas to a remarkable level of technical and visual refinement. A closely related Physichromie from 1976, executed with the same combination of screenprinted aluminum and stainless-steel inserts, was later included in his major international retrospective Color in Space and Time. In Physichromie 1065, the viewer is no longer simply looking at color; we become part of the process through which color appears and changes. This transformation of color from a fixed property into a living visual experience remains Cruz-Diez's great contribution to modern art.
