Henry Moore (1898-1986) Reclining Figure: Right Angles, 1981 Bronze with green patina 4-1/4 x 7-3/4 x 4-3/4 inches (10.8 x 19.7 x 12.1 cm) Ed. 6/9 Signed on reverse: Moore PROVENANCE: Private collection, Dallas, Texas; By descent to the present owner. LITERATURE: A. Bowness (ed.), Henry Moore, Sculpture and Drawing, Volume 6: 1980-1986, London, 1988, LH 830, another cast illustrated. NOTE: The present work is registered with the Henry Moore Foundation, Hertfordshire, under LH 830 cast 6. Few subjects are as closely associated with Henry Moore as the reclining figure, a theme he explored continuously throughout his career. In Reclining Figure: Right Angles of 1981, Moore transforms the human body into a compact arrangement of curves, openings, and strong angular forms. The figure remains recognizable, yet solid and empty space become equally important, bringing the human body and abstraction together. Although only a few inches in size, the bronze has the presence of Moore's monumental outdoor sculptures. Created late in his career, it demonstrates that even after decades of exploring the reclining figure, Moore could still find new possibilities within this familiar subject. Here, the body becomes an architecture of mass, space, and balance—a concise expression of the sculptural language that defined his career.
