II, pp. 397-98, no. 884, illustrated. In 1913, Wilhelm von Bode wrote admiringly of this masterful seascape by Jan van Goyen painting when it was in the noted collection of August de Ridder: "The composition is fresh and free, without any search for effect; the execution is broad and spirited. The local tones blend almost completely into a general gray tonality, which renders, in an almost modern and impressionistic manner, the luminous and vaporous atmosphere of the North Sea on the coasts of Holland. All these qualities make this painting a masterpiece from the artist's late period" (as translated from the French, Bode, p. 13).
