Dwight Clay Holmes (American, 1900-1986) Hill Country Fall, West of Johnson City, Texas Oil on canvasboard 8 x 10 inches (20.3 x 25.4 cm) Signed lower left: Dwight C. Holmes Titled and stamped on the reverse: West of Johnson City, Texas PROVENANCE: Private collection, Fort Worth. Trained as a sculptor, painter, and printmaker, Dwight C. Holmes was an important early Texas artist known for his Southwestern landscapes, still lifes, and architectural paintings. He studied at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, where he also became an instructor. Famous in Fort Worth for his architectural moldings which decorate several historic buildings, Holmes was also commissioned to paint large murals for Texas patrons.
