Olin Travis (American, 1888-1975) Autumn in White Rock Park Oil on canvas 20 x 24 inches (50.8 x 61.0 cm) Signed, titled, and inscribed on the reverse: Autumn in White Rock Park / Olin Travis / #218 PROVENANCE: The artist; Josephine Oliver Travis, wife of the artist; Jean and Joseph K. Oliver, brother of J.O. Travis, by descent; Estate of the above. EXHIBITED: Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum, Canyon, Texas, "Oilin Travis: Texas Master," 1995, no. 51. With deep roots in the Texan terrain and possessing an innate knack for encapsulating the inherent beauty of nature, Olin Travis left his mark as one of the state's esteemed painters. Born in 1888 and trained at the Art Institute of Chicago, Travis' versatility allowed him to traverse various artistic quarters--from landscapes to portraits and illustrations--with equal aplomb. His oeuvre is defined by an uncanny ability to capture the sunlight's play and the delicate heartbeats of seasons on canvas. Evoking a sense of place and mood, his work has charmed viewers with its characteristic tranquility and earthbound palette. As a co-founder of the Dallas Art Institute, Travis also played a pivotal role in the growth of the Dallas art scene.
