To mark the 25th anniversary of German reunification, the sculptor Tony Cragg developed a steel sculpture entitled Grenze weg (Border Gone). In its proportions and column-like structure, the work bears a distant resemblance to the Brandenburg Gate — formerly a symbol of Germany’s division. Particularly striking is the prominent fissure at the centre of the sculpture, which may be understood as a symbol of the newly established connection, rendering permeable what was once an insurmountable barrier.
The sculpture Grenze weg was produced in an edition of 35 examples, together with 6 artist’s proofs, and was published by the newspaper BILD. The work stands as an exemplary expression of Cragg’s characteristic visual language, distinguished by its organic quality and freely conceived forms.
