The sculptural work of the Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani is always grounded in the “disegno,” the
drawing as its fundamental creative basis. From this foundation, he developed his paintings and, between 1909 and 1914, primarily his sculptures. Heads and busts are among his most frequent motifs. Reduced to their basic geometric forms, with a strict composition of the face and a neck that is usually elongated in the Italian “maniera,” they appear idol-like, almost icon-like. Their reduced linearity combines meditative stillness, purity, and melancholy. During this period, Modigliani was influenced by the works of the Romanian sculptor Constantin Brancusi, whom he met at the Paris Autumn Salon and under whose guidance he made his first attempts at sculpting in stone.
