Vivian Maier (American, 1926-2009) A Melancholic Celebration, circa 1950s Gelatin silver print 4-3/8 x 3-5/8 inches (11.1 x 9.2 cm) (image) 5 x 3-7/8 inches (sheet) From the Ron Slattery collection As Vivian Maier was well known to have taken many photographs of the children she watched after, there is a particular selection of seemingly sad children in her repertoire. In A Melancholic Celebration, rather than directing the children to smile as is common in birthday party photos, Maier captures them with subdued and melancholic expressions. Overall very good condition. Sheet curls upward slightly at the side edges. Curved line near center boy's face, this line is in the negative and not a condition issue. Edge chipping and some bumping to the corners. Sheet is loose, not framed.
