Trenton Doyle Hancock (b. 1974) The Legend Attempts to Put Out His Own First of Life, 2003 Mixed media on canvas 78 x 78 inches (198.1 x 198.1 cm) Property from a Private Collection, Austin, Texas PROVENANCE: James Cohan Gallery, New York. EXHIBITED: Contemporary Art Museum, St. Louis, Missouri, "Trenton Doyle Hancock: The Re-Evolving Door to the Moundverse," January 19-April 22, 2018. Trenton Doyle Hancock's works from 2003 are important today for their exploration of identity, race, and the dynamics of conflict and resolution. This work is also significant for his examination of Black identity and the use of humor and surrealism to address race-related themes. The immediacy of his imagery, which blends graphic art with fine art, has helped bridge the gap between popular and "high" culture Through his fantastical narratives and visual language, Hancock presents a nuanced view of the self and society that resonates in our current era, making his work as relevant and impactful as ever.
