Mark Ulriksen (American, b. 1957) Dress-Reversal, The New Yorker magazine cover, March 15, 2004 Acrylic on board 13 x 9 inches (33.0 x 22.9 cm) (sight) Signed lower right: Ulriksen PROVENANCE: Meyerovich Gallery, San Francisco, California; Acquired by the present owner from the above. The best cover art for The New Yorker magazine strikes a balance between timeliness and profundity, creating imagery that captures the spirit of a moment. Few pieces accomplish this with as much wit as Dress-Reversal, published shortly after Gavin Newsom, then-Mayor of San Francisco announced the issuance of marriage licenses to gay couples. The painting depicts two figures dressed in traditional wedding gowns—a bearded man beaming with delight, and woman bearing an expression of surprise at her newfound company in the bridal department. It is a touching celebration of a victory in the fight for LGBTQ-rights in America. A copy of the March 15, 2004 New Yorker magazine cover accompanies this lot.
