Keisai Eisen (Japanese, 1790-1848) Backward-Viewing Falls, One of the Three Waterfalls (Urami-ga-taki, santaki no sono ikkei), from the series Famous Scenic Spots in the Mountains of Nikko (Nikkosan meisho no uchi), 1840 Woodblock on paper 13-1/2 x 9-3/8 ines (34.3 x 23.8 cm) (sheet, oban) Signed: Keisai Eisen ga Property from the Nelkin Collection HID12401132022 © 2024 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
A beautiful print with deep red ink tones. The condition to the work is consistent with its age. Mild to moderate accretions throughout sheet along with mild toning to sheet, contributes to an overall deepening in tone. Sheet is extremely thin, perhaps due to delamination of the sheet, with some buckling throughout. Three small (3/8" at largest) tears/losses along right margin, do not appear to impact central image. A small (1/4" x 1/8") loss/area of thinning along border line/upper margin. A small (1"x 3/8") repair with a secondary support to reinforce the area along left edge verso; some other remnant paper/adhesive along that same edge. Sheet appears trimmed along left margin. Two small areas of hinge tape residue in upper right and left corners verso. Unframed.
