Condition
Vivian Maier (American, 1926-2009) Early Village Strolls (7 works), 1950 Gelatin silver prints 2-1/2 x 3-1/2 inches (6.4 x 8.9 cm) (sheets) From the Ron Slattery collection The photographs here, taken on Vivian Maier's 1950 travels abroad to the rural French village from where her family emigrated to America and the surrounding region, are her earliest known work. Already they show her dedication to her craft and her quickly growing confidence behind the camera. According to biographer Pamela Bannos, Maier was so insistent with her camera that some people in her family's French village thought she might be a spy, and she ended up being questioned by the police about her photography. At least one print features handwritten inscriptions by Maier on the verso. HID12401132022 © 2024 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
Overall excellent condition. Some scattered hairline scratches to some sheets visible in raking light. Sheets curl slightly. Deckled edges to all sheets. Sheets are loose, not framed.
